Avoidance

Avoidance

A little less than a human being, a little less than a happy high, a little less than a suicide, the only things you really tried.

1 Francis Bacon
Ok, so I don’t cry when I see his work, and I wouldn’t say it’s a spiritual experience.  His work is so human, so suffering, so strong in every aspect.  It is far too overwhelming and too familiar to be spiritual.   How someone could be Francis Bacon, could create and display like Francis Bacon I am terrified to know.  My jealousy and wonder and fear extends for eons.

2 Henry Darger
His art and his story may be creepy as fuck, but it is never-endingly interesting, meaningful, mysterious and beautiful.

3 Egon Schiele
His portraiture is provocative and wondrous, but his landscapes are also few and precious.  His art is largely intellectually interesting to me: its boundaries, its draw, its tension, its meaning, its simplicity, and how to achieve them.

4 Anselm Kiefer
It is hard to describe Anselm Kiefer’s work; how emotional it is, how relevant it will always be, how overwhelming it is.  I think that Anselm Kiefer is the only artist whose art makes me cry, not out of jealousy (like Francis Bacon’s can) but just out of pure horror and feeling and empathy.  FUUUUU.  I love Anselm Kiefer.

5 Wassily Kandinsky
I prefer his brighter, softer work.

6 Degas
His ballerinas, his women in everyday life, etc etc.  But Oh My God, his sketches, his studies, his later work.  Every unfinished work of art he did takes my breath away.  It’s like he captures the entire essence of form with just a few lines.

7 Lucian Freud
His art makes me think of what would happen if Egon Schiele’s art and Rembrandt’s art had a baby.

8 Jeff Wall
His work is so intimate, yet so universal.  Dichotomy, yo.  I’m into it.

9 Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot
His best work is probably his portraiture but I can’t pick any one thing of his anyways.  He was incredibly prolific and incredibly amazing and I encourage you to look up his stuff.  If you don’t know who he his, I’m sure you’ve seen his stuff in museums before.  I know he’s a very well known painter but I’m not entirely sure why he isn’t even more well known.
